IT Trending Updates “Rapid Fire Round” (Ben/Becky) - 5-10min

  • Apple has made $100 billion dollars (ArsTechnica)
  • Apple reported its earnings for Q2 2022 to investors on Thursday. Once again, the company beat analyst expectations and posted massive revenues and profits across most of its product lines. The only category that saw a drop in year-over-year revenue was the iPad.
  • Q2 2022 largely included the months of January, February, and March 2022. For that period, Apple reported $97.3 billion in revenue, up 9 percent year over year, with a profit of $25 billion.
  • Engadget points out though that revenue growth is slow - seems like people just love to hate Apple when it comes to their earnings.

  • Yes, your phone can get a virus — here’s how to spot it (The NextWeb)
  • Last year, cyber security company Kaspersky detected nearly 3.5 million malicious attacks on mobile phone users. The spam messages we get on our phones via text message or email will often contain links to viruses, which are a type of malicious software (malware).

    • While it’s not always easy to tell whether your phone is infected, it will exhibit some abnormal behaviors if it is. Some signs to watch out for include:
      • poor performance, such as apps taking longer than usual to open, or crashing randomly
      • excessive battery drain (due to the malware constantly working in the background)
      • increased mobile data consumption
      • unexplained billing charges (which may include increased data usage charges as a result of the malware chewing up your data)
      • unusual pop-ups, and the device overheating unexpectedly.

  • Google releases beta version of Android 13 'Tiramisu' (The Register)
    • Google on Tuesday released the first beta version of Android 13, the next iteration of its mobile operating system.
    • Referred to internally as "Tiramisu," the beta release follows a Developer Preview that debuted in February.
    • Android 13 features a new runtime permission for sending notifications from an app, a system photo picker for sharing photos and videos securely with apps, themed app icons, and better localization, among other things.
  • Microsoft details “Microsoft Edge Secure Network” a built in VPN for Edge (onMSFT)
    • According to Microsoft, this new "Edge Secure Network" is all about protecting your device and sensitive data as you browse. Upfront, the company also warns that this is also a preview feature, so feedback can be gathered. Microsoft even dives into the details of what powers the feature. They partnered with Cloudflare on the tech, where Cloudflare is Microsoft’s data subprocessor in order to provide the services.
    • Whenever this feature is ready to roll out, it will live in the Settings and more menu in Microsoft Edge as Secure Network as a shield icon. It will turn off automatically when you close Edge, and has to manually be enabled the next time you want it. A drop-down menu will also show you how much data you're using, and when your data will be refreshed.

Usually, Microsoft tests new features in the Canary channel of Microsoft Edge first, so we'll have to keep an eye out for this feature then. We'll keep you posted if, and when, this feature goes live, but for now, let us know if you'll find this useful by dropping us a comment below.

Community Update 5-10min

  • Badges? We got ‘em! Did you notice the Founding Member badge yet? Yes, if you’ve participated you should have that on your profile. If you’re only lurking and haven’t at least given a kudo, well…
  • We are ONE member away from hitting the 200 mark. I’m excited about that because we’ve only been open a short time. And it’s because of how awesome all of YOU are!
  • Thanks to suggestions from last week, we added a new “homelabs” label on the hardware board so you can geek out about your setups. I see that some of you have started already. Have fun! And continue those great ideas, please.

  • Unifying SSO & MFA to Reduce IT Complexity May12th at 12PM EST
    • For SMBs, one reason IT can be such a heavy lift is the assumed number of point solutions needed to enable security and easy resource access across the organization. If bigger companies are struggling to manage multiple tools even with dozens of people on the IT team, how can SMBs possibly do the same with a fraction of the headcount?
  • Redhat beta is available, so we are shooting for same day support - Mayish
